About Sankofa Elders Project

The Sankofa Elders Project is a community outreach, engagement, and mobilization created to center and empower Black Elders to identify and advocate for community solutions to address health disparities in their lives, families, neighborhoods, and communities. The project is a collaboration of Sistahs Aging with Grace & Elegance, California Black Women’s Health Project and Aging while Black.

We are currently recruiting 40 motivated Sankofa Elders Project Volunteer Ambassadors (Sankofa Ambassadors) to share their time, talents, and wisdom to help craft a vision and plan to uphold the dignity of Black elders in Los Angeles County as they age.

From April 2024 - December 2024, the Sankofa Ambassadors will come together once a month to share their experiences, perspectives, and  ideas towards developing a Community Manifesto for the Care and Belonging of Black Elders that will be used as a platform to advocate for equitable resources to support the care, health, and wellbeing of older Black adults.

The Volunteer Orientation and Community Info Session will take place on Saturday - April 13th at 9:30 am at the Compton Center for Sustainable Communities.  The May 2024 - December 2024 sessions will take place in the mornings on the 3rd Saturdays of the month at rotating locations throughout the Second Supervisorial District (Sup. Holly Mitchell).
