About the Sankofa Village Storytelling Project

Launched in Spring 2021, the Sankofa Village Storytelling Project explored how Black women navigate the hope, beauty, trials and tribulations of aging while gaining deeper insights on what Black women need in their lives and communities to thrive at every stage of the aging journey. Loosely translated, Sankofa means “go back to the past and bring forward that which is useful.” Through focus groups and video interviews, 40 Black women elders shared their lived experience, wisdom and legacy with the world.

The Sankofa Village Storytelling Project culminated with the release of Sankofa Stories - Black Women Reflect on Aging in Place and Community: A Narrative on Policy.

In addition to uplifting the narrative wisdom of Black women elders, Sankofa Stories highlights the social determinants of health that disproportionately impact Black women’s aging experiences and begs the question of what’s actually needed to achieve equitable outcomes for older and aging Black women in California.
